Coach's Code of Conduct

Coaching is a wonderful responsibility advancing the spirit of the game by furthering discipline, drive and decision-making. The TIPPCO soccer organization is dedicated to maintaining and developing a cadre of coaches who aspire to the following key principles.

Character: Moral or ethical strength

A key component of coaching is to provide an example to players. In this regard, a coach must develop and display a consistent, positive demeanor to help players make decisions that reflect fairness in competitive situations, decency in interpersonal relationships, and respect for authority.

Organization: Arrangement into a coherent form.

It is imperative to provide an organizational structure in which players understand and to which players can readily adapt. Practice drills and procedures should be well planned to allow for players to grasp the underlying principles of the game and be rewarded for achievement. Game line-ups and substitution patterns should be structured to provide the opportunity to advance players' skills and to help improve players' attitudes.

Attitude: A state of mind or a feeling.

Since travel soccer is designed to maximize a player's ability, the desire to win is much greater. Still, a winning attitude is not always judged by a team's record. Coaches must be able to instill an understanding of competition that takes into account all of a team's achievements, good sportsmanship, and a foundation for personal accomplishment.

Communication: The art and technique of using words and actions effectively.

A vital vehicle for success is the ability for a coach to communicate with players, parents, and club and league officials. Verbal or physical abuse or other harassing behaviors are not condoned and can lead to removal. Successful communication is derived from a desire to listen and learn and speak and teach.

The art of communication is the language of leadership. – James Humes

Honesty: The display of integrity, fairness, and civility.

In order to enhance player development, competitive spirit, and continuous improvement, coaching integrity is paramount. To be fair, coaches must be able to create an environment in which honesty is used to assess a player's ability, analyze a team's weaknesses and strengths, and deal realistically with players' parents and guardians.

No legacy is so rich as honesty. – William Shakespeare
